Setting
This story takes place mostly in the apartments of Mr. Hoppy and Mrs. Silver. Since the author, Roald Dahl is British the apartments are called “flats.” So, the setting of this story is mostly in the flats of Mr. Hoppy and Mrs. Silver. Both flats have large balconies.
Mr. Hoppy’s balcony is completely covered with plants. He has a lot of plants and they take up most of his balcony. This is very useful for when he is spying on Mrs. Silver. He hides in his plants and peeks down at her. When Mr. Hoppy buys the 140 tortoises he keeps them on his living room floor. The only furniture that Mr. Hoppy has is a table and two chairs. Mr. Hoppy has a kitchen scale in which he weighs the tortoises before he switches them on Mrs. Silver’s balcony.
Mrs. Silver has the downstairs flat. On her balcony lives the tortoise “Alfie.” Alfie has a small house that he hibernates in during the winter. The house looks kind of like a dogs house. Mrs. Silver has a kitchen scale in which she weighs Alfie.
