Sean Ferrarese
_
As a public elementary school teacher at Creslane Elementary School for the past nine years, Sean has taught both third and fifth grade students. In addition to his job at the elementary school, Sean has also taught Urban Farm (LA390) a class in the Landscape Architecture program at the University of Oregon.
As a child growing up on the East coast of Australia, Sean enjoyed exploring the mangrove swamps and estuaries surrounding his home. Sean's family moved to Northern California when he was ten. There he continued his pursuit of nature in the oak savannahs and creeks of Marin County. These early experiences fostered a great interest in the natural world that has remained one of his passions to this day. His role as a 5th-grade teacher has allowed him to share this knowledge and passion with his students. Sean helped create a month-long unit focused on ecology for all 5th graders at his school. Each year, he has lead classroom and field lessons using a curriculum he developed that is aligned with state educational standards and enhances the students’ understanding of wildlife biology, stream ecology, watershed processes, and invasive species. Sean also co-founded and worked collaboratively to develop an annual Earth Day event that brings elementary, middle and high school students together with local non-profits, government scientists, and volunteers to identify macroinvertebrates, test water quality, go on guided nature walks, remove invasive plants, plant native trees and shrubs, and create art out of recycled materials.
In his current positions, Sean regularly interacts with, collaborates with, and presents to a diverse group of people, including students, parents, teachers, administrators, school board members, and community members. Sean is partnering with a local non-profit organization, Camas Educational Network to expand and improve the school garden program. Sean is a member of Creslane Elementary School's Talented and Gifted Advisory Team.
