Roald Dahl was born on the 13th of September, 1916 in Wales. He served in the British Royal Air Force during World War II. He was a flying ace and intelligence officer rising to the rank of “Wing Commander.”
Roald Dahl attended the famous British boarding school, Repton. He did not have too many positive experiences with academics during his school years. It was noted that he never seemed a particularly talented writer in his school years. One of his English teachers wrote in his school report card, “I have never met anybody who so persistently writes words meaning the exact opposite of what is intended.
If he didn’t excel in the classroom he did on the sports field. He was exceptionally tall, reaching 6 ft. 6 in. as an adult. He was made the captain of the school “fives,” and squash teams, and he also played football.
He has written many books for both children and adults. He has been called, “one of the greatest storytellers for children of the 20th century.” Some of his more well known books are: James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The Witches, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and The BFG.
He died on November 23rd 1990 in Oxford, England. He was 74.
